The Classics. Some things just never go out of fashion and San Francisco's world famous landmarks are among them. Here are other tour development suggestions that include some or our well-known attractions.
Classic San Francisco.
When your clients want to see all of The City's world-famous sights, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, Mission Dolores and Golden Gate Park, you can't beat a regularly scheduled city tour.
A half-day motorcoach or van tour, an overview of selected neighborhoods by motorized cable car, or a self-guided tour by car following the 49-Mile Scenic Drive.
An up-close-and-personal look at San Francisco's unique architecture, colorful history and ethnic neighborhoods on a walking tour.
One of the most popular destinations in The City, your clients can stroll along Fisherman's Wharf and the waterfront area or take a pedicab tour.
The Wharf is also one of the places to begin a ride on a cable car, America's only moving national historic landmark, for a fun-filled ride and fantastic views. A free, self-guided tour of the Cable Car Museum shows you firsthand how the cable cars operate.
Active Adventures.
If your clients enjoy outdoor activities, Golden Gate Park is a terrific place to be. They can golf, jog, hike, lawn bowl, play tennis, hire paddle boats on Stow Lake, rent roller skates or bicycles and ride all the way to the beach. The main road through the park is closed to motor traffic on Sundays and holidays year-round.
A helicopter ride over The City or a kayak across the Bay.
Run in one of San Francisco's annual foot races: Hill Stride, The San Francisco Marathon or The City's most famous, the Bay to Breakers, which attracts more than 100,000 costumed runners every May.
Take a 15-minute ferry ride to Angel Island (departures from Fisherman's Wharf) and hike, bicycle or picnic along paths with views of The City and San Francisco Bay.
Walk or cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge followed by a ferry ride back, the ultimate Only-in-San-Francisco adventure.
If they want to venture farther afield, your golfing clients can enjoy world-class courses such as Pebble Beach, then shop the boutiques and enjoy spectacular views of the rugged California coast along the 17-Mile Drive in Carmel, 133 miles south of The City on the Monterey peninsula.
Four hours east of The City lies Yosemite National Park with its vast vistas and wilderness experiences. Your clients could also opt for whitewater rafting in the Sierra foothills or gold panning and horseback riding in the Gold Country.
Sheer Indulgence.
San Francisco was recently voted one of the top five American cities in which to indulge oneself. The City has an extraordinary number and range of restaurants, with the famous chefs to match. Your clients can take a world-class cooking class, or you can arrange a dine-a-round for your group (or easily put one together for a couple of clients).
A variety of San Francisco's spas offer the ultimate in pampering for an hour or a full make-over day.
The Napa and Sonoma wine country is home of more than 500 wineries, where your clients can taste the vintages or picnic on the grounds or even have dinner with the winemakers themselves.
At the local hot springs and day spas, luxuriating is the order of the day, whether the treatment is for pure relaxation or working out those muscles stressed by bicycling, hot air ballooning, golfing, hang gliding or hiking.
To the south a number of quaint coastal towns offer everything from romantic seaside inns to a complete resort environment for a day or overnight stay.
Out and About.
For a fun family day trip, your clients have a wealth of choices within a one- or two-hour drive south of San Francisco.
California's Great America, a theme park with dozens of rides, is in Santa Clara, just 35 miles away.
Winchester Mystery House, a bizarre 160-room Victorian mansion, awaits in San Jose.
Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad, a steam train ride through majestic California redwoods, begins in Felton, 74 miles away
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk features seaside amusement rides and a mile-long beach 74 miles from The City.
A half-hour north of The City your clients can explore Muir Woods, a 550-acre preserve of majestic California redwood trees. The tour is often combined with brunch or shopping in the picturesque hillside town of Sausalito.
Animals of land, sea and air live and perform in the innovative Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, located 25 miles northeast of the City in Vallejo. Regularly scheduled ferry service departs from Pier 41.
Three hours south of The City, the Monterey Bay Aquarium on historic Cannery Row, showcases the history and ecology of the Pacific off the Monterey Peninsula, complete with kelp beds and otters both wild and tame.
The Cultural Traveler.
Arts & Culture are a year-round pursuit in San Francisco. Summer is the time for outdoor events, free concerts (from classical to gospel) at Stern Grove and Shakespeare and theatre festivals in our parks.
Fall is opera season and the start of theatre season offering everything from the Best of Broadway musicals to the latest works by emerging playwrights. Early autumn brings the Jazz Festival and the Blues Festival.
Winter and spring mean dance. The San Francisco Ballet and other local dance companies present both contemporary and traditional programs February through May.
Museums and art galleries are open all year and represent the cultural diversity that is San Francisco. Fort Mason Center offers museums of Mexican, African-American, Italian and folk art, while The City's major museums focus on Asian, modern, American and European art.
There's almost always a fair or parade or some kind of celebration on the streets of San Francisco; refer to the Events Calendar for dates and information
